Motorcycle tie-downs keep you safe while you ride

Whether it's a track day, a breakdown, or a newly purchased motorcycle, whatever the reason for transporting your motorcycle, you need to make sure it's securely fastened in place. Motorcycle tie-down straps are the answer. But which type is right for the job and what are the differences between them? Read on as we explain how to choose the right motorcycle tie-down straps.

Why use motorcycle tie-downs?

If you don't secure your motorcycle properly when transporting it on the back of a trailer or inside a van, damage will occur. It's that simple. No matter how careful you are, your pride and joy will topple over at the first bump or bend. A few well-placed tie-downs can keep everything in place.

What are the different types of motorcycle tie-downs?

Made from a woven polyester fabric, tie-downs are strong and durable. Additionally, unlike bungee cords, tie-downs have minimal stretch. This is an important feature because a motorcycle's suspension expands and compresses during transport. Properly placed tie-downs prevent movement. You'll typically find that motorcycle tie-downs have two methods of adjustment and tightening. They are either a ratchet mechanism or a spring-loaded alligator clip. Alligator clips are best for quick adjustment and ease of use. This mechanism has limited tie-down strength and can be a better secondary tie-down. Ratchet tie-downs are stronger. It has the mechanical advantage of a handle and a non-slip ratchet system that applies extra force to the tie-down for maximum tightening. As for the method of attachment, an alligator clip tie-down has a mechanism on one end and passes through an anchor point. Alternatively, a ratchet motorcycle tie-down features a hook-shaped fastener. You can use it on an anchor point or hook it to a secure railing or structure.

How strong are motorcycle tie-downs?

Gator grip straps rarely provide strength information. Whereas ratchet straps usually give a maximum lifting and lashing weight. Depending on thickness, the maximum lifting capacity of an average 5 cm wide ratchet strap is about 500 kg. This weight is enough to lift two BMW R1250 GS off the floor. The lashing weight is calculated as one-third of the lifting weight and is the maximum pressure you can put on the straps and accessories.

Tips for motorcycle tie-downs

Depending on the type of transport, you can tie down your motorcycle at four points; two on each side at the front and two at the back. Alligator clips are also commonly used to secure handlebars when transporting in a truck. Check the type of anchor point available (rails, D-rings, eyebolts, etc.) as this will determine the type of fastener on the strap. Alligator clip and ratchet-style straps come in different lengths. Make sure the strap is long enough to pass through the anchor point and loop back around the fastener. Don’t stress too much if it’s the wrong length; most motorcycle straps can be attached together. When looking for anchor points on your motorcycle, use the frame rails. Pillion footrests and exhaust mounts can bend under the harsh ratcheting action. Also, don’t place the straps close to gas tanks and body panels as they can dent or crack under the pressure. If you can’t avoid contact with surfaces that are prone to marking, a wraparound padded strap cover will help protect the paint. Finally, wrap the strap around the motorcycle and secure it to the anchor point, compressing the suspension slightly before tightening. This process will help prevent the motorcycle from bouncing around during the journey. No matter what type of motorcycle you’re transporting on your trailer or truck, motorcycle tie-downs will keep your two-wheeled investment safe.
