Bungee cords (also called shock cord or elastic cord) look simple, but picking the right one means understanding three things: length, diameter, and load capacity—plus the hook and material that fit your application. Get these right and your cords hold securely and last for years; get them wrong and you risk snapped cords, damaged goods, or rebound injuries.
This guide explains how to size a bungee cord for your job.
1. Length: don't over-stretch
Bungee cords are sold by their relaxed (unstretched) length, commonly from about 6 inches up to 120 inches. To choose a length:
Measure the distance between your two anchor points.
Pick a cord that's shorter than that distance, so it stretches to create tension—but only moderately.
The golden rule: never over-stretch. As a working guideline, aim to use a cord at roughly half to two-thirds of its safe stretch, not pulled to its absolute maximum. Over-extension is the #1 cause of broken cords and dangerous hook rebound. If you're constantly maxing a cord out, you need a longer one.
2. Diameter: thickness = strength
The cord's diameter (e.g., 3/16", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2") is the main driver of its strength:
Thin cords (~3/16"–1/4") — light-duty: tarps, covers, small bundles, organizing.
Medium cords (~3/8") — general-purpose securing and medium loads.
Thick cords (~1/2") — heavy-duty elastic ropes for bigger jobs.
Thicker cords contain more elastic core and a tougher sheath, so they resist higher tension and last longer. When in doubt, step up a diameter.
3. Load capacity: match the cord to the job
Bungee cords are rated by the tension/load they handle, which varies by construction:
Light-duty cords — roughly 50–150 lbs tensile range, for covers and light securing.
Heavy-duty elastic ropes — roughly 300–800 lbs, for more demanding applications.
Industrial-grade options — higher ratings for specialized uses.
Important: bungee cords are elastic and their holding force changes as they stretch. They are not a substitute for a rated ratchet strap when securing heavy or rigid cargo for transport. Use bungees for flexible, light-to-medium securing, and rated tie downs for heavy freight.
4. Hooks: the right fitting matters
The hook is as important as the cord. Common options include:
Zinc-plated J-hooks — strong, corrosion-resistant, general purpose.
Plastic-coated S-hooks — protect surfaces from scratches.
Carabiner-style clips — quick, secure attachment.
Custom mold hooks (OEM) — built for specific applications.
Choose hooks that won't bend under load and won't damage your anchor points or cargo. Plastic-coated or rubber-tipped hooks help avoid scratching vehicle paint and finished surfaces.
5. Materials and durability
For outdoor or demanding use, look for:
Quality elastic core (natural latex or high-grade synthetic rubber) for consistent stretch and recovery.
Abrasion-resistant sheath (nylon/PET/polypropylene) that protects the core.
UV treatment for sun exposure—UV-resistant cords survive far longer outdoors.
Weather/water resistance and a wide temperature tolerance for all-season use.
Quality cords are also fray-proof, easily cleanable, and available in many colors for coding and organization.
Quick sizing checklist
1. Measure anchor distance → choose a length that stretches moderately, not maxed. 2. Match diameter to load (thicker = stronger). 3. Confirm load capacity suits the job—and use a ratchet strap for heavy freight. 4. Pick hooks that fit and won't damage surfaces. 5. Choose UV/weather-resistant materials for outdoor use.

FAQ
How much should I stretch a bungee cord? Only moderately—use it well within its safe stretch. If you're pulling it to its maximum, switch to a longer cord to avoid breakage and rebound.
What diameter bungee cord do I need? Light tasks: ~3/16"–1/4". General purpose: ~3/8". Heavy-duty: ~1/2". Thicker cords are stronger and more durable.
Can bungee cords secure heavy cargo for transport? No. Use rated ratchet straps or tie downs for heavy or rigid freight. Bungees are for flexible, light-to-medium securing.
How long do bungee cords last outdoors? UV-treated, quality cords can last for years, but inspect regularly and replace any cord with fraying, exposed core, or lost elasticity.
